FSMA Field Day in Iowa City on September 17th, 2018

To ensure a safer food supply, the federal government passed and is enacting the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The Act shifts the focus from responding to food-borne illness to preventing it. Growers of fresh fruits and vegetables are especially at risk for growing, handling and selling products that may contain pathogens. The Iowa Farmers Union is sponsoring field days to help growers with their compliance efforts. IFU is working in collaboration with Iowa State University Extension and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. Each session includes plenty of hands-on experiences and supper will be provided.

  • Produce safety
  • Worker hygiene training
  • Soil amendments and land use
  • Agricultural water
  • Managing wildlife and domesticated animals
  • On-farm walk-in coolers
  • Irrigation in raised beds
  • Harvesting, post-harvest handling and sanitation
