Iowa Farmers Union to Host Virtual Press Conference on Rising Health Care Costs Threatening Farm Families
Nevada, Iowa — The Iowa Farmers Union (IFU) will host a virtual press conference on Monday, December 15, at 10:00 a.m. CT to highlight the mounting concerns among Iowa farm families about rising health care costs—and the urgent need for Congress to extend the enhanced premium tax credits.
Farmers warn that if these tax credits are allowed to expire, thousands of Iowa families will face significant premium hikes. For many, the anticipated increases would push already-tight farm budgets past the breaking point.
“Farm families are already stretched thin, and rising health care costs are putting enormous pressure on our operations,” said Aaron Lehman, Polk County farmer and President of the Iowa Farmers Union. “If these tax credits aren’t extended, many Iowa farmers will face impossible choices. We need Congress to act now to ensure that health care remains affordable for the people who grow our food and keep our rural communities strong.”
During the press conference, farmers who are enrolling in the Affordable Care Act through the Marketplace will share firsthand experiences of how the rising health care costs affect their families, their farm operations, and the broader rural economy.
