Iowa Farmers Union President Calls for Strong Farm Bill as Senate Committee Fails to Act
NEVADA, Iowa – Iowa Farmers Union President Aaron Lehman, a fifth-generation Polk County farmer, released the following statement after the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee failed to advance the farm bill:
“Farmers need a strong farm bill now more than ever. With markets suffering from dysfunctional tariffs, farm input prices increasing due to monopolies and wars without victory in sight, and food insecurity issues rising throughout Iowa, it is clear that now is the time to act.
“Historically, farm bills have been an investment in farmers, ranchers, and rural communities as well as in nutrition programs for all Americans. Without those investments from Congress, it means farmers and rural Iowans won’t be able to deliver the solutions from the farm when we need them the most.
“This farm bill is three years overdue, and now time is running out to get the job done. Farmers don’t have the option to walk away from their fields and pastures if the job isn’t done. Congress should learn from that lesson and come together with solutions instead of walking away from their work.”
